Even though school has already been in session for two weeks, summer is just now winding down for the boys and me. This morning I awoke, much too early thanks to Jackson's insanely wet diaper, and set out to water the grass. For the first time in months a chill was sent up my back when my toes stepped on to the back patio. It was refreshing to feel a rush of cool air upon going outside, but a deep breath in reminded me of the threat knocking on our back door.
In Bastrop, fires are burning through acres and acres and destroying homes. Just a few miles away three fires were reported last night. The smoke billowed above head as the sun set, and it continued to linger this morning. Any hopes of walking the boys on this beautiful morning were dashed when I smelled the smoke and said a silent prayer for all those affected. The final weekend of summer was a devastating one for many in those areas.
So long, sweet summer. You brought us a lot of heat, not enough rain, but a whole lot of laughs and memories. Hopefully next summer Mother Nature won't be quite so rough on this part of the country and we can enjoy a little more time outdoors. See you in 2012.
